Have you ever heard of those “gentle Giants” in football that play in the trenches of the game? They don’t get any of the headlines or front page pictures on the programs. Well, you have just met Cameron Moitoza of the BSU Football team. If you have seen “Cam” around campus he probably blends in, other than being slightly larger than the average student and his signature scruffy beard.
Cam, is a junior History major with a minor in Secondary Education and the starting center on the BSU Football team. A native of Norton, MA he played his high school football at Coyle and Cassidy High School in Taunton, MA. Cam wouldn’t be seen as your typical student-athlete in the following since. He doesn’t live on campus or just off campus with a bunch of his teammates, he carpools everyday day from Norton to save money. When he’s not playing football he’s either working a job on campus, managing U13 Soccer Club the Taunton Eagles, or staying home and helping out with his family of 8 brothers and sisters, four of whom have been adopted into his family. Because Cam is one of the oldest siblings he helps out however he can. He often picks his siblings up from school, helps them with homework or chores around the house when his parents are working.
Last year, during Division 3 week Cam competed in the Belly Flop contest. The money raised goes toward Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). Cam raised the most money for JDRF out of any of the other participants. This cause is close to his heart, because his girlfriend’s younger brother has type 1 diabetes. Cam plans to participate again this year. To further help find a cure for diabetes, Cameron has walked in the Roger William’s Park Zoo’s “Walk for JDRF.”
The BSU football team is Cam’s “second family.” The coaches are like mentors. If any of the players need someone to talk to the coaches are always there. Football is a time each day when he can focus on a sport he loves and take a break from his responsibilities of school, work and home. Cam chose BSU out of 10 schools. He is happy he did because what a great experience he has had at BSU. Cam looks to become a middle or high school teacher upon graduation and coach football.
