Michaela Cosby is a senior majoring in Exercise Science, who has her sights on graduating in January 2014. She arrived on the BSU campus in 2010 and immediately made an impact on the court with the women’s basketball team in her freshman year. Michaela is from Walpole, MA and chose Bridgewater after a recruiting visit when she was able to sit in on a class. She enjoyed the small class sizes and the professor knowing all the students by name. She liked the BSU basketball court, which reminded her of her hometown court, the campus size.
“Cos” known by her friends and fans, came to Bridgewater with a learning Disability which could have been a major obstacle for a new freshman athlete. As for all freshman athletes they think they can make the transition on their own, and not stay on top of studying and homework. But with the guidance of her Coach, Bridgett Casey and Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance and Academic Support Sue Crosby-Tangen Cos saw the light. Being known as a hard worker on the court, Michaela turned those efforts into the classroom. “Michaela is the hardest working student I ever had in my entire teaching career, as well as an incredible athlete,” said former High School Coach and teacher, Steve Waisgerber.
As a Student-Athlete you must be disciplined in training for your sport as well in your time management. Practices, games and training take hours out of a student-athlete’s day. If you add that to two or three classes a day, study time for each of those classes of which Michaela would dedicate to the Academic Achievement Center and coupled with working multiple jobs on campus. She needed to grow up fast and with the help from Coach Casey and Sue Crosby-Tangen, she was always able to say eligible to play and achieve the Dean’s List this year.
Cos’s Dean List achievement this year, was not to be over shadowed by her on court accolades. She surpassed 1000 points in her career, was selected to the first team Eastern College Athletic Conference, All Northeast Region first team, second team NEWBA All Star Classic and the New England Division 3 All Star Team, and guides her team to their third straight Massachusetts Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship and third NCAA Tournament appearance.
